Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's legal representative entered the answer on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the case thrown out for multiple factors including that his defendant, a critic of former President Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after Donald Trump urged his attorney general to move forward against him.

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they planned to file several motions to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully appointed to take over the legal matter.

Mr Comey's proceedings was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into a different rival - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

The former director seemed in good spirits as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was supported by his partner, his wife and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government terminated.

Following the reading to the court read his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the accusations.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Russia and Trump's campaign.

Via social media Mr Comey published to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have known for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our knees."
